The Just Shall Live By Faith
Carolyn Evans

Listed here are several Bible verses that teach that the just shall live by faith. (The Greek text was added by Darroll Evans)

Hab 2:4 "Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him; but the just shall live by his faith.   (NKJ)

Rom 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."   (NKJ)

Gal 3:11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."   (NKJ)

Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him."   (NKJ)

Both the Old and the New Testaments agree that the just shall live by faith.  That fact is not in question.  The question is, but how?  By whose faith do we live?

Gal 2:16 "knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. (NKJ)

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (KJV)

Galatians 2:16 is often mistranslated and is also somewhat misunderstood.

Did you know that the Bible tells us of the faith OF God and the Faith OF Jesus Christ?  We are children of faith because our Father is a Father of faith and of the faithful.

Galatians 2:16 is a perfect example of the faith OF Jesus Christ. That verse tells us explicitly that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by “faith of Jesus Christ” (Gr. dia pisteoos Ieesou Christou-dia pistewV Ihsou Cristou).  It is “by/through {the} faith of Jesus Christ.”

It also tells us that is done so that we may be “justified by faith of Christ” (Gr. ek pisteoos Christou-ek pistewV Cristou), “because of {the} faith of Christ.”

Our faith IN Christ is the direct result of the faith OF Christ at work in our lives.

I am not a KJV only teacher, however the King James and J. P.  Green’s Literal Versions are the only major translations that correctly translate the following verses that speak of the faith OF God and OF Christ.

In each of the verses listed below, we are dealing with the Genitive case. Some teach that they are Objective Genitive meaning that the action flows to the noun. I believe that we are looking at the Subjective Genitive meaning that the action flows from the noun.

Rom 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? (KJV)

Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: (KJV)

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (KJV)

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (KJV)

Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. (KJV)

Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. (KJV)

Phil 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:   (KJV)

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. (KJV)

Let me tell you of Peter’s faith.  You will find the story in Matthew 14:25-31.

The Apostles saw Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee.

Peter alone said, “Jesus, if it is really you tell me to come to you.”

The rest of the Apostles kept their mouths shut!

Jesus said, “Come,”

One word was all the Son of God needed.

Peter climbed out of the boat and stepped onto the sea.  His faith in Christ Jesus allowed him to walk on the water.  However, soon he began to look at his circumstances instead of keeping his focus on Christ Jesus.  He began to sink.

It was at that point, the point at which Jesus’ follower began to sink to a certain death that the faith OF Christ came into play.  Jesus was exercising His faith by walking on the sea during a storm.

Circumstances are of no concern to Christ.  He is the Master of all, including circumstances!

It was at that point, when Peter faced death at sea that Jesus extended His faith to Peter, and reached out to lift him up.  Peter literally “lived’ by the faith of Christ Jesus.

During the past centuries that story has been told and re-told by countless people.  They focus of the physical facts with little or no understanding of the spiritual truth being portrayed.

Just as with Peter, we who are called and appointed to salvation in Christ live by the faith OF our Lord and Savior!  He lifts us up, retrieving us from death and giving us life in Him!
