Chapter 9

John 1:1-12

1And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. \
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

As Jesus walked by he saw a man who had been born blind.

Jesus’ disciples asked, “Master, who sinned!  Was it this man, or his parents, that caused Him to be born blind?”

All mankind is born under sin! We were born blind!

That man who was born blind represents mankind!

Those who followed Jesus assumed that he had been born blind as the result of some personal sin by his parents or a sin that he committed prior to his birth!

The question showed ignorance on the part of the disciples!

But, Jesus showed His patience with them as He answered, “Neither!”

His blindness was not caused by his sin or his parents’ sin!

The happened so that the works of God may be made manifest in him!

Then Jesus said, “I must do the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day!

The night is coming when none may work!

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world!

Then, Jesus spat on the ground, made some mud, and anointed the eyes of the blind man!

Man was made from the dust of the earth! This anointing of his eyes represents a new creating of eyes for that man as Christ does for all who call upon Him!

We cannot see Christ until the Holy Spirit causes us to call upon Him!

Jesus told the man, “Go and wash your eyes in the pool of Siloam!

Siloam mean sent!

The man went to the pool, washed, and came back seeing!

His neighbors knew that he was blind, but now they also knew that he could see!

They said, “Isn’t this the one that sat and begged?”

Some of them said, “This is he!”

Others said, “It looks like him!

And he said, “It’s me, and I can see!”

They asked, “How is it that you can now see?”

He told them bluntly, “A man that is called Jesus made mud with split, anointed my eyes, and told me to the pool of Siloam, and wash! So, I went and washed, and I received sight!”

They further asked, “Where is He?”

Again, his response was blunt!

He said, “I don’t know!”

John 9:13-34
13
They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

The Pharisees came to get that man who was blind.

It had been the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.

Making the mud on the Sabbath was against tradition!

The Pharisees asked him how he received his sight. So he told them!

At that the Pharisees claimed that Christ Jesus could not do such because it was, according to their traditions, ungodly!

How can a man do a miracle and break the Sabbath at the same time?

They knew nothing of God and less about His Law!

Their clamoring caused a division among the populous!

Again, they asked the blind man, “What do you have to say concerning that man that opened your eyes?”

The man who had been born blind told them, “He is a prophet!”

But the Jews could not accept the man’s assessment!

So, they called on his parents!

They asked, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How is it that he now sees?”

His parents, being fearful of the Jewish leaders, said, “This is our son, and he was born blind! But, we don’t know how he sees!  He is of age, why don’t you ask him?”

As I said, they were deeply afraid of the Jewish leaders!

The Jewish leaders had agreed that if anyone said that Jesus was the Messiah Christ, he would be kicked out of the local Synagogue!

Again, the Jewish leaders called the man that was blind and told him, “We know that Jesus is a common sinner, tell us a lie and call it praising God!”

The Jewish leaders were so far from godly that they had no clue as to what is and is not praise!

Today, many so called Christians (Chinos-Christians in name only) are in the same sinking boat!

However, the formerly blind man answered in a way they did not expect!

He said, “I don’t know whether or not He is a sinner, but I do know I was blind, but now I see!”

They thrashed out, “If you are so smart, how did he open your eyes?”

At which the man retorted, “I have already told you, and you did not hear it!”

The he asked, “If I tell you again will you become his disciples?”

Then, they despitefully said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples.”

Little did they know how spiritually far away from the Truth and yet how physically close they were!

They said, “We know that God spoke to Moses, however as for this fellow is concerned, we don’t know where he came from.

The formerly blind man said, “Why then have we seen such a wonderful thing? None of you knows where He comes from and yet He opened my eyes! We know that God does not hear unrepentant sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God, and does His will, he will be heard. Since the world began none born blind has had their eyes opened! If this man were not of God, he could do nothing!”

At that the Jewish leaders said, “You were born in sin and now you dare to try to teach us?”

And they threw him out.

John 9:35-38
35
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

Jesus heard that they threw him out of the Synagogue, and went to find him.

When he came upon the man Christ asked, “Do you believe on the Son of God?

The man, in turn, asked, “Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?”

So Jesus bluntky told him, “You have seen Him and he is now talking to you!

The man responded, “Lord, I believe!”

And he worshipped Christ Jesus.

John 9:39-41
39
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Jesus said, “For the sake of judgment I am come into this world, so that they which do not see may see, and they that they which see may be made blind.

When the Pharisees heard that they asked, “Are we also blind?”

Jesus told them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin! However, since you say, We see, your sin remains.
