Chapter 16

John 16:1-22
1
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

As we begin this chapter, Christ expands His theme, “These things have I spoken to you so that you may not be offended!”

Offended (Gr. skandalizō-σκανδαλίζω) speaks of being enticed to sin.

Jesus warned His followers, “They shall put you out of the synagogues!

“The time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is doing God’s service!”

That teaching has been superimposed onto the Church, and with the rise of Islam it is difficult to dispute!

Muslims murder Christians and think they are doing God’s will!

Islam is a perverted religion!

Christ further explained the reasoning behind such perversion. “They will do that to you, because they have not known the Father or Me.

Such social perversion is due to spiritual perversion!

“But, I have told you this so that when the time shall come, you may remember that I told you of them!

“And, these things I did not tell you at the beginning, because I was with you.”

While He was with them, they were safe from physical threat!

Soon after Christ’s crucifixion, Satan would come looking for the Apostles.

Then Christ said, “But, now I go to Him who sent Me, and none of you is asking where I am going.

“But, because I told you these things, you are filled with sorrow.

“The fact is that it is useful for you that I go away.

“Because, if I don’t go away, the Comforter will not come, but if I leave, I will send Him to you.

“And, when He comes, He will reprimand the world of sin, show God’s righteousness, and warn of the coming judgment!

“He will reprimand the world of sin, because they do not believe in me!

“He will show God’s righteousness, because I am going to My Father, and you will see Me no more!

“He will warn of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged!

“I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now!

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth! He shall not speak about himself! Instead, whatever He hears, He shall speak, and He will show you things to come!

“He shall glorify Me, because He shall receive what is mine, and show it unto you!

“All that the Father has is mine!

“That is why I said that He shall take what is mine, and show it to you!

“Soon, you shall not see Me, and soon after that you shall see Me again, because I go to the Father!”

Then, some of Jesus’ asked among themselves, “What is He saying, ‘Soon, you shall not see Me, and soon after that you shall see Me again, because I go to the Father!’”

They asked, “What in the world does ‘Soon’ mean?  We don’t understand!”

Jesus knew about their dilemma, and told them, “Do you ask among yourselves about what I said, ‘Soon, you shall not see Me, and soon after that you shall see Me again’?

“I tell you truthfully say that you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice!

“You shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy!

“A woman when she is in child birth hath sorrow, because her hour has come, but as soon as she has delivered the child, she does not recall the anguish, instead it turns to joy because a baby has been born into the world.

“And you all are now sorrowful, but I will see you again, and your hearts shall rejoice, and none may take your joy from you!”

Many of us long to see Christ Jesus, but now the Holy Spirit of Truth guards us and guides us until His coming!

John 16:23-33
23
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Then Jesus told them, “And in that day you shall ask me for nothing!

“I tell you truthfully, whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you!

“Until now you have asked nothing using My name, but now ask, and you shall receive so that your joy may be complete!

“I spoken to you in proverbs, but the time is coming when I shall not speak to you using proverbs, but I shall speak to you plainly about the Father!

“At that time, you shall ask using my name, and I will not tell you that I will pray to the Father for you, because the Father himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and trusted that I came from God!

“I came from the Father into the world! Now, I leave the world, and go back to the Father!”

At that, His disciples said, “Lo, now you are speaking plainly, and not in proverbs!

“Now are we sure that You know all things, and there is no need or any of us to question You!

“We believe that You came from God!”

Jesus responded with a question, “Do you believe?”

The He told them prophetically, “Behold, the hour comes and is now here when you all shall be scattered!

“You all shall leave me alone!

“And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me!”

Again, Christ Jesus reminded them, “These things have I told you so that in Me you may have peace.

“In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer!

“I have overcome the world.”

We are not ruled by circumstances!

We are not to worry about tribulation, because Christ Jesus has overcome the world.

Re-read this last verse and notice the word “but.”

We have peace, because we are ruled by Christ Jesus, and have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us!

Many people worry about their bank account during any “tribulation,” but is that the issue?

No!

Christ Jesus gave His life on the cross for our salvation, not for our bank balance!
