Chapter 14
(For the next few chapters, we
study perhaps the most interesting portion of Scripture. These chapters are a
study within a study!)
John 14:1-14
1 Let not your heart be
troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not
so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again,
and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and
from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the
Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me,
Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and
how sayest thou then, Shew
us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but
the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in
me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the
works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he
do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that
the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Then Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled!
You believe in God, also believe in Me.
In My Father's house are many mansions! If it weren’t so, I would have told you! I go to prepare a place for you, and
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you so that
where I am, you may be, and you know where I am going, and you know the Way.”
Jesus is the Way, the only Way to God the Father!
At that Thomas asked, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the
truth, and the life! No man comes to the Father, except through Me.
It is my op9inion the Way, Truth, and Life should have been
capitalized!
“If you had known Me,
you would have known My Father! From now on you all know Him, and have seen
Him.”
Christ said that to His followers!
Philip, having no idea what that meant, said, “Lord, show us
the Father, and it will fully convince us!”
Jesus rebuked him asking, “Philip,
have I been with you so lone and yet you don’t know Me?
Anybody who has seen Me
has seen the Father! So, why do you ask to be shown the Father?
“Don’t you believe that I am in the
Father, and the Father in Me?
“The very words I speak to you are
not Mine!
“The Father who lives in Me does the works!
“Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is
in Me!
Here is the true meaning of the Jewish Shema.
The vast majority of Jews do NOT understand their greatest confession!
שְׁמַ
יִשְׂרָאֵל
יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵינוּ
יְהוָה אֶחָד
“Shema Y’israel! Adonai Elohenu! Adonai ehad!”
“Hear O’ Israel! The
Lord (Yahweh) is God! The Lord (Yahweh) is One!
God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
He is One!
He is completely unified in plan and purpose!
We, the Church are to be unified in plan and purpose!
Jesus also told Philip, “Or, believe Me for the very works' sake!
“Truthfully, I tell you, ‘He that fully trusts in Me shall do
the works I have do, and even greater works, because I go to My Father!
“‘And whatever you all shall ask in My name I will do so that the Father may be glorified in the
Son!
“If you all shall ask anything in My name, I will do it!’”
John 14:15
15 If ye love me, keep my
commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom
the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth
me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At
that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in
you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth
them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him,
and will manifest myself to him.
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou
wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus
answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will
love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not
mine, but the Father's which sent me.
25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present
with you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all
things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the
world giveth, give I unto
you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again
unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father:
for my Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it
is come to pass, ye might believe. 30 Hereafter I will not talk
much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as
the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
Then Jesus said, “If you all love Me, keep My
commandments!”
Notice that Christ used the plural “commandments”, and yet many believe that
Christ Jesus gave only one commandment.
“And as a consequence, I will pray
to the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter so that He (the
other Comforter) may abide with you forever!
At that, Jesus explained that the
other “Comforter” is the “Spirit
of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it cannot see or know Him!”
Christ further explained, “You all
know (are intimate with) Him, because He lives
with you, and shall be in you!
“I will not abandon you as orphans!
I am coming to you!
“Soon, the world no longer sees me,
but you all shall see me, because I live you all shall also live!
“In that day you all shall know that
I am in My Father and you all
are in Me, and I am in you!
“Those that have My
commandments and keep them love Me!
“And, those that love Me shall be loved by My Father!
“I will love him, and will show Myself to Him!
But, Judas (not Iscariot) asked, “Lord, how will You show Yourself to us but not to the world?”
Jesus answered, “If anybody loves Me, he will keep My words, and as a consequence, My Father
will love him, and We (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) will come to him, and make Our home with him!
“Those that just say that they love Me (but give only lip service) will not keep My
sayings!
“My words are not Mine!
“Instead, they are the Father's
which sent Me!
“These things have I spoken to you
while I was present with you!
“However, the Comforter, the Holy
Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name shall
teach you all things! And, He will bring everything I told you back to your
memory!
“I give leave you My
peace!
“I do not give it as the world does!
“Don’t be anxious!
“Don’t be afraid!
“You all have heard Me say how I will leave and yet return to you!
“If you all love Me,
you would rejoice, for the very reason that I said, ‘I go to the Father, because My Father is greater than I am!’
“And now it will happen as I told
you beforehand so that (when they happen) you
all may believe!
“After this, I will not discuss it
with you very much, because the prince of this world comes, and he has no power
over Me.
“However, so that (all) creation may know that I love the Father, I will do as He
wants.
“Get up!
“Let’s us go!
