Where Is God?

Carolyn Evans

When you read the title, you probably thought, God is omnipresent.  Of course you would be correct.  This teaching is not to diminish his omnipresence, but to explain, from a biblical standpoint, the place of his throne room.   Some Christians think of God as being somewhere beyond the planets and when they pray, they think He is very far away even though they have God the Holy Spirit living within them.  I wondered where God was until I read Isaiah 40:21-22.  I first had a revelation of this verse over 20 years ago, but this is the first time I have written anything about it.

Isa 40:21-22
21 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. (NKJV)

Where does God sit, in heaven!  Who are the inhabitants of the earth, we are!  God and heaven are in the spiritual world and we on earth are in the physical world.  God can see us, but we can not see Him.

Let’s think about how high you would have to be to see the inhabitants of the earth the size of grasshoppers.  First, if you stood on top of your house and saw your neighbor, would he be the size of a grasshopper, of course not.  On the other hand, if you were in an airplane looking down as the plane was ascending to reach a certain altitude there would be a point where houses would be the size of grasshoppers.  So you had gone too high.  So some place between the top of your house and below the normal flying altitude of most aircrafts is heaven.

Let’s look at some more scripture.

Isa 14:12-14
12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' (NKJV)

Satan is saying he will ascend into heaven, above God.  So where is he going, above the heights of the clouds or heaven.

Nahum 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. (NKJV)

The clouds are the dust of His feet, so heaven is in the clouds.  Some say when clouds are mentioned in the bible, it is referring to Heb 12:1.  I don’t think God would say the men He is referring to in Hebrews are the dust of His feet.

Heb 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (NKJV)

Ps 147:7-8
7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praises on the harp to our God,
8 who covers the heavens with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains. (NKJV)

God covers the heavens with clouds.

Matt 26:64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." (NKJV)

Mark 13:26 "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (NKJV)

Mark 14:62 And Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven." (NKJV)

These verses refer to Jesus coming on clouds, in clouds, or with clouds.  Once you start to grasp the idea that Heaven is somewhere close to the clouds, all of these verses have a deeper meaning.

Matt 24:29-30
29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (NKJV)

One day we will be able to see into the Spiritual World and then we will be able to see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory
