Chapter 2

John 2:1-11
1
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2
And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5
His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6
And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7
Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8
And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9
When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

This chapter begins by telling us that on a third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee.

We too who belong to Christ shall attend a wedding!

Jesus was there, and she shall be at the marriage of the Lamb!

However, she shall not be there as a co-redeemer, or co-mediator!

She shall be there as a believer in Christ as the redeemer, because Christ redeemed her!

At the marriage in Can, they ran out of wine!

The wine of redemption is the blood of Christ Jesus!

That wine never runs out!

When the physical wine ran out, Mary, Jesus’ mother pointed out that fact!

Jesus’ response was, "Woman, what have I to do with you? My hour is not yet come!"

At this point, Mary gave some advice that is still valid.

Mary told the wedding party servants, "Whatever He says. do it!

As it "happened", there large six waterpots there.

Isn’t happenstance wonderful? <That question is facetious>

Each held approximately 20 gallons.

Jesus told the servants, "Fill each of the waterpots!" with water.

Afterward they were told to draw out the water and take it to the head of the wedding ceremony.

It was at this point that they discovered that the cups taken to the head of the wedding were no water, instead they were now wine!

The "governor of the feast" called the bridegroom, and told him, "Everybody usually begins with the good wine, and when those in attendance are so drunk it doesn’t matter, they substitute poor wine, but you have held back the best for last!"

Making water into wine seems to be a beginner miracle!

But how often do you see it today?

The miracle served a purpose!

It "manifest" Christ’s glory and His disciples believed on Him!

Modern Jews follow signs, but sign do not necessarily follow them!

John 2:12-22
12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

Then Jesus along with His family and disciples went down to Capernaum.

They stayed there a few days.

It was time for Passover was at hand, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.

In the Temple were sellers of sacrifice animals and birds, oxen, sheep, and doves.

There were also money changers.

As part of the religious routine, the Temple Priests would not accept anything except Jewish money!

Jesus was more than little upset at what he saw!

So, He had made a whip and drove the merchandisers them out of the temple along with their sheep, and oxen!

Jesus also poured out (Gr. ekcheō-ἐκχέω) the changers' money, meaning that He dumped the money on the ground and turned over their tables!

Jesus told the dove sellers, "Take these things out! Don’t make my Father's house a house of merchandise."

His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for Your house consumed me."

Today, some churches (lower case c) are nothing more that religious stores, selling everything they can!

The Jewish leadership confronted Christ demanding a sign to prove His authority!

Jesus responded, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

The Jewish leaders said that it took Forty-six years to build the Temple, and they questioned Him saying, "Will You rebuild it in three days?"

For those not knowing the Holy Spirit that was nothing but empty bragging!

However, Jesus was not referring to that physical building!

He spoke concerning the temple of his body!

Signs are for the lost to prove that they are lost!

It was not until after the resurrection that the disciples finally got it!

The original Apostles were not chosen because of their marvelous intellect!

And, those of us chosen today have not been chosen because we understand all things!

John 2:23-25
23
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
24
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
25
And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

During that Passover many Jews believed that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God!

However, their belief was based on His miracles!

Many today have not seen great physical miracles and yet, due to the power of the Holy Spirit, they believe!

Jesus did not commit (Gr. pisteuō-πιστεύω), put His faith, in them!

He knew the limitations of "seeing-is-believing" faith.
